Grandpappy's Homemade Catfish Bait For Slamming Lunkers

By:

When grandpappy's homemade catfish bait for slamming lunkers became popular, many anglers were a little skeptical, but soon found out grandpappy was right on. Grandpappy had a few catfish bait recipes that worked well over the years. He was always catching catfish for dinner and breakfast. The top recipe is the Ivory Soap. This sounds strange to anglers when they first start fishing the cats, but it is true. Catfish love the stinky bait that Grandpappy used to make.

It only takes a little bit of time to make the bait that will put more than enough fish on the table.
Four bars of Ivory soap
1/2 c sugar
1/2 c water

In a pan, dissolve the sugar in the water. Shave the soap bars into the water/sugar mixture. While doing this, keep the heat on low. After everything is melted, pour the mixture out onto a piece of paper. Use you hands that are wet, to pat the soap into a 1/2 inch flat slab. Then cut the flat slab into cubes before it cools all the way. Put the cubes into a zip-lock bag to keep it moist.

You can use these cubes to catch a lunker with a treble hook or a single hook.
The catfish just love the smell and taste of this stinky bait.

Here is another one of grandpappys homemade catfish bait recipes. This one was a little outdated and had to be changed a bit, but it works just fine.

In a pan pour:

1 c flour
2 tablespoons peanut butter
3 tablespoons honey
3 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons garlic
2 tablespoons mustard
1 egg

Add water slowly as you stir to make a doughy mixture. Separate into how many parts you want and form balls with the doughy mixture and let get hard in the refrigerator. Grandpappy then used to brown the ball in a little oil in a pan to make sure it would hold together in the water.

Grandpappy has another catfish bait recipe that he used in one of the lakes by his house. It is a smelly recipe that can make you run and hide. However, it makes the catfish come a running for dinner. Since grandpappy used to fish for just about every fish there was for variety in taste, he always had fish guts and heads around. He would take the fish cuts and heads, add some blood from a butchered chicken, and mix it altogether. Then he would make a dough ball to put the guts and blood inside. For the dough, he just used flour and water to make a paste mixture. Then he would divide it into parts, place some the mixture into each part, and roll it into a ball. Then he browned it on the outside. Grandpappy caught a seventy-two pound catfish using this catfish bait.

Another bait that grandpappy made for catching catfish was so bad that you could have gotten sick just thinking about it, but he would bring home a big cat for dinner. Granny used skin that catfish with no problem, while everyone watched. She was the expert catfish cleaner. Since they lived on a farm, he used this recipe quite a lot.
